Stone city

June 4th, 2007 (08:15 am)

Last night, I dreamed…

I dreamed of a stone city.

Not only houses and buildings were built of stones but roads, hedges...also. Even furniture, decorations, flowers... all were carved of stone in the most precise details. The inhabitants walked in long and gray hooded coat, most of them ignoring me. On the great wall around the city, there were a lot of stone antiques but the most remarkable things were hundreds of dried corpses stuck in coffins hung on its surface. The deformed faces of those zombies showed that they might have died in agony. The scene was so freakish and somehow looked like an exhibition about ancient monuments.

I was so amazed at what I saw. I did not understand why I ended up in such a bizarre situation. The gray sky screamed at me and the cold wind taps at my face. I felt anxious when other people noticed me as I looked so out of place. Then an unknown girl whom I could not see her face clearly came and helped me to disguise as an inhabitant of the stone city. The girl told me she had a feeling that some unwanted thing might happen soon. Suddenly a group of men in armors appeared and tried to catch us. We ran as fast as we could until the girl said she was at her limit. She hid me in a coffin right before the men caught up. While being dragged away, she cried out loudly for me:

"They are our enemy. They have captured all of our friends and you are the last. They are malicious so don’t let them caught you!".

Shivering with fear under the black blanket in the coffin, I wondered why the unknown girl did so much to help me and why the men in armors chased us. The desire to find out the truth no matter what urged me to follow them. I came to a large square where many black-soldiers were patrolling. In the middle, other prisoners were confined in a huge-stone-cage, all bloody and beaten. Then I noticed that most prisoners had long and yellow hair except the girl who helped me. Her hair was short and white. Afraid that I would be noticed, I hid behind a fire tower made out of a huge rock. From that distance, I could see black-soldiers brought the white-hair-girl to the scaffold and tortured her.

The screams of tortured prisoners echoed nonstop, making me terrified. When the black-soldiers beheaded some of the prisoners, I was so scared that I ran away without looking back. I only stopped to catch my breath after knowing that there were no one after me. Then I found myself on a stone bridge crossing over a green river. After resting for a while, I looked down the bridge and found on the nearby riverbank a couple of vendor who invited me to their meal with gestures. Unfortunately, coming down was impossible as I found a labyrinth lying at the end of the bridge. I could not locate its entrance and exit so I gave up. Not knowing what to do next, I stood alone on the stone bridge, exhausted and depressed.

I was still there when the sun slowly set down. Everything around became darker and darker. When the sunlight had reduced to a weak beam hovering on the horizon, the huge stone watermill blocking my sight from the left riverbank started moving magically. The irritating noise of water falling down from the watermill somehow sounded like the laugh of Mephistopheles(1).

And thus the dream ended when the last reddish beam of twilight dissolved into the air.

(1) - Mephistopheles is a name given to one of the chief demons of Christianity appearing in European literary traditions. (from Wikipedia)

@To my friend who has just talked with me: It's not like I can't understand your standpoint, but well... if you get angry with me because I talk to you like that or because I post these lines on the blog, then I have nothing to say. We are too different. Still I learn from you a lot, and that's a good thing. Thanks.

_______________________

Talking with a friend of mine (I am black and my friend is blue):

I’m feeling so insecure because the feeling I got after making my blog open to public. It’s like being strangers explore my own private life.

Do you put on your address, age, name or anything like that? No, right? Then why are you so worried?

But once you write down your thoughts and let it be published, others would know about your inner feelings.

I do not find it bothering. Things others have never thought about, I could have, but I don't care if they know. I believe that I always could find new things around and even inside me. Though things that I create do not bring money or fame to me but I am satisfied with them. By revealing their own ideal to others, people can not only improve their clarity of thoughts but also gain a lot of skills, at least I think so.

It's your own ideal and it differs from me. Humans often are too superficial. They only judge things by their surface. It’s the truth, for everyone. Sometime even the most intelligent man makes mistake. That's something I respond to your ideal.

I see, you mean the risk side of revealing one’s thoughts. But aren’t the true values that we have gotten till now from our pains, mistakes or risks? If you are always scared of being exposed then how can you find yourself on a higher level? Plus, I think no one can go further just by making things only for oneself to enjoy. If you show no one your standpoints to receive comments, then how can you know what you are really good and bad at?

Thinking like that, you’re actually a child, maybe. But around us are not always friends, don’t you think it would be dangerous once they know you quite well?

Humans always change. You in the present would be very different from you in the future. Even if others have known you for a long time, that does not mean they can see all of you. They see your view but things have made you like that, they do not know. And things that make you changing, they do not know also. Then how could they really KNOW about you?

Someone will know. I mean that there are some who can see through other's thoughts and find some interesting information about the writer.

If we could understand others very well by just reading some of their posts on the internet then we no longer need to live in society. No one can see through all of other's thoughts. Even if they think they could actually they could not. You could only know a person just when you were his/her important person or his/her true rival.

Actually I’m scared of being exposed by those I don’t trust. And there are a limited numbers of people I really trust. NO, not scared. I’m just too annoyed.

It is so obvious that those you do not trust would never know what you really are. Furthermore, human always show things that seem to be their unchangeable policy; still they might not think like that and even do against what they have claimed. Things they have said, they could trash them out easily. Things they have just done, they might consider them to be stupid. I could never say: "I can read others' thoughts". Humans are far more complicated than what they have showed. But since I could not always predict others’ responses, I find it interesting to discuss and keep connections with people outside my wall.

But for those who could never reach my level. I don’t want them to see me, even with just my thoughts.

If they could never reach your level then how could they expose you? I have been through not too much hardness but enough to be able to understand: "Fear comes out from your inner self.” Truly, I think you are still nervous.
______________________________

People might have thought that this conversation just shows the different standpoints. In fact, I post it here since I think everyone has struggled like that in their mind at least once. Till in the end, my friend keeps her ideal and I keep mine. Man... What is the truth anyways...

A shoujo manga

There's a former famous child actor who passes her days in boredom and without purpose. There's a talented football player who was rejected by his team.
There's a genius progamer who acts codly to almost everyone but his computer.
There's a strange girl who likes wearing Lolita fashion...
Almost of them have serious scars in the past and are considered abnormal by the society's standard. They could have become like Hikikomori one day if their lives continue like that.
Fortunately, there's a free high school for students like them who don't have a place where they belong. Students attending there neither have to come to any class nor talk with anyone even teacher, they can do anything that is not allowed to do in an ordinary high school and learn whatever they want. Somehow it is like another kind of Totochan's school.
In that free school, those stray cats meet each others by chances then step by step find the places for their minds. They learn to stop being bothered by the past, overcome the biased jubgments , treasure the present and then begin a new stage in their lives.

All above are what happen in Cat street - a shoujo manga. Kamio Youko really made me supprised with this manga. It is so different from her previous works (Hana yori dango) which is absolutely not taste of a shounen manga freak like me. I have to admit that though her style is not my favourite. This proves me that almost artists are not one-sided as normal people always think. They could create works that only for profits, but at the same time that doesn't mean they couldn't make something meaningful.

Music review: A scary story

The main reason why I love progressive rock's concept albums is I can enjoy both music and stories at the same time. Among the greatest progressive rock bands, Ayreon is still a bit "young" but I find their music so emotional and creative. The Universal Migrator is one of Ayreon’s great achievements. In my opinion, though I like this album very much, I feel scary of it also. The story itself is full of loneliness, regret, illusions then ends with a frightful death... There are so many sorrows to bear. Anyway, this album is definitely worth listening to.

Ayreon - The Universal Migrator (2000)
The Dream Sequencer

During the battles a number of colonists resided on Mars, witnessing the destruction on earth from afar. For years they managed to keep themselves alive with the supplies they brought with them from earth. These supplies ran out and almost all colonists have died. The main character in the story is the last surviving human being, a child of the first colonists. He has never been on earth.
To make the boredom on Mars somewhat bearable, clever technicians designed the Dream Sequencer, a machine that allows Colonists to travel back to their own youth by means of hypnoses, but also to their lives before; their pre- incarnations so to speak.
It is in this machine that the Colonist relives his youth on Mars, his death as a woman on earth during the war of 2084, the first moonlanding of 1969, and his life as the standard bearer in the famous 17th century painting of Rembrandt: The Nightwatch. He stood on the shores of England as Queen Elisabeth I, watching the English fleet sail out to stop the Spanish Armada, and as a Mayan girl he witnessed sacred ceremonies in Tikal. We find out that the Colonist once was the minstrel Ayreon and that, in another even earlier incarnation, he was present during the construction of Stonehenge. His soul's first incarnation was the first human being on earth.

Flight of the Migrator

The Universal Migrator Part II continues the story of the last man alive on Mars as he decides to venture further back in time. He wants to go all the way back to the time right before the universe was created, a time when there was nothing but chaos. The Colonist witnesses the big bang and the creation of the first soul: The Universal Migrator. This soul divides in various new souls that each go in search of planets they can inhabit. This is how they bring life to various planets and start different civilizations.
In the Dream Sequencer program the Colonist follows the soul that is headed for earth. On his long journey through space, he passes astronomical manifestations such as quasars, pulsars, supernovas, black holes, and wormholes. He finally enters the solar system, but the DS program goes on overload. The Colonist should never have ventured that far back in time. The Dream Sequencer is desperately trying to wake the Colonist from his deep state of hypnoses, but it is too late; the Colonist dies in the machine. Then the Migrator speaks to him without words: "Eternity lies before you. You are the new Migrator!"

Though this short animated film was made by Osamu Tezuka pretty long ago (in 1962), still it is very related to how things nowadays are going on. Viewers only have to spend 3 minutes enjoying this very funny and concise short film. The opening might make viewers consider this to be just a normal ironicalness but soon they would find the ending somehow profound.

Vincent - Tim Burton (65mb)
Link download: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=PU4NIV5P
Link view online: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQNKMmemFPk

Tim Burton's poem :

Vincent Malloy is seven years old
He’s always polite and does what he’s told
For a boy his age, he’s considerate and nice
But he wants to be just like Vincent Price

He doesn’t mind living with his sister, dog and cats
Though he’d rather share a home with spiders and bats
There he could reflect on the horrors he’s invented
And wander dark hallways, alone and tormented.

Vincent is nice when his aunt comes to see him
But imagines dipping her in wax for his wax museum

He likes to experiment on his dog Abercrombie
In the hopes of creating a horrible zombie
So he and his horrible zombie dog
Could go searching for victims in the London fog

His thoughts, though, aren’t only of ghoulish crimes
He likes to paint and read to pass some of the times
While other kids read books like Go, Jane, Go!
Vincent’s favourite author is Edgar Allen Poe

One night, while reading a gruesome tale
He read a passage that made him turn pale

Such horrible news he could not survive
For his beautiful wife had been buried alive!
He dug out her grave to make sure she was dead
Unaware that her grave was his mother’s flower bed

His mother sent Vincent off to his room
He knew he’d been banished to the tower of doom
Where he was sentenced to spend the rest of his life
Alone with the portrait of his beautiful wife

While alone and insane encased in his tomb
Vincent’s mother burst suddenly into the room
She said:“If you want to, you can go out and play
It’s sunny outside, and a beautiful day”

Vincent tried to talk, but he just couldn’t speak
The years of isolation had made him quite weak
So he took out some paper and scrawled with a pen:
“I am possessed by this house, and can never leave it again”
His mother said: “You’re not possessed, and you’re not almost dead
These games that you play are all in your head
You’re not Vincent Price, you’re Vincent Malloy
You’re not tormented or insane, you’re just a young boy
You’re seven years old and you are my son
I want you to get outside and have some real fun."

Her anger now spent, she walked out through the hall
And while Vincent backed slowly against the wall
The room started to swell, to shiver and creak
His horrid insanity had reached its peak

He saw Abercrombie, his zombie slave
And heard his wife call from beyond the grave
She spoke from her coffin and made ghoulish demands
While, through cracking walls, reached skeleton hands

Every horror in his life that had crept through his dreams
Swept his mad laughter to terrified screams!
To escape the madness, he reached for the door
But fell limp and lifeless down on the floor

His voice was soft and very slow
As he quoted The Raven from Edgar Allen Poe:

“and my soul from out that shadow
that lies floating on the floor
shall be lifted?
Nevermore…”

A beautiful and quiet story

Tortov Roddle is a traveler who wanders around the world with a giant long-legged pig as a companion. He writes notes in his diary about his different quiet adventures in which are without any dialogue. The world through Tortov‘s view and experiences is full of childlike wonders and delights. In his long journey that seems to have no end, there are many beautiful sights to be seen and amazing discoveries to be made such as: cities of light on the backs of giant frogs; fish appears in a coffee cup and a movie projected on the back of a bear... Each scene will remind viewers of interesting dreams or anything like that (an adventure video game maybe). But despite how many extraordinary things he has seen, as being a traveler, Tortov still travels on to see other more wonders that he has not enjoyed yet.

The ending somehow reminds me of a song created by Pink Floyd named “The show must go on”. No matter how much we human have been through, we shouldn’t stop moving on since there are still numerous phenomena waiting for us ahead.

Lyrics:
(the opening) Happ...py.....happp...py? ...happy?...

(ending of the album) Hello everyone. I suppose you think that nothing much is happening at the moment. Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha. Well, that's what I want to talk to you all about; endings. Now, endings normally happen at the end. But as we all know, endings are just beginnings. You know, once these things really get started, it's jolly hard to stop them again. However, as we have all come this far, I think, under the circumstances the best solution is that we all just keep going. Let's keep this going in sight, never an ending. Let's remember that this world wants fresh beginnings. I feel here, in this country, and throughout the world, we are crying out for beginnings, beginnings. We never want to hear this word "endings". I know we all want to sit down. I know you want to take it easy. Of course we're looking for the good. Of course we're looking for the fresh start.

Isn't that charming? Do you know, I really feel I could dance. Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha... (dancing) Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha... charming... ha-ha-ha... (CRASH!)
Happy?...Happy?
Happ...Happ...

Shortcuts from this short animated film (Memory - by Osamu Tezuka - 71.6mb):

"There are times when you want to forget but you cannot forget. This is called memories."

"If this earth is destroyed by war, will there be creatures who would remember us humans?"

"Grandpa, have you seen a human before?"

"If my memory is correct, there are two types of human, one male and the other female. And they live on a home called toilet if I am not mistaken."

"What is a toilet?"

"That's a magnificent object that can never be described with words. And toilet culture to the humans is like a support for their soul, you could say."

"Memory can be anything. why don't you remember something?"
